Kanpur: A 20-year-old man was arrested for allegedly throwing his 19-year-old wife into the Ganga from the Pariyar-Bithoor bridge in Unnao on Friday evening following a quarrel over suspicion about her illicit relationship. The woman remained missing as police and divers resumed the search on Saturday morning.Her father and villagers also blocked a road outside the Pariyar police outpost, demanding that she be traced quickly and effective action taken.Sujeet Rajput, a resident of Ghazipur village in the Bithoor police station area, had married Usha of Maraunda Manjhwara village in the Safipur police station area on Dec 14, 2024.Sujeet had taken Usha to her parental house on Friday and enquired about her brother-in-law, who was staying there for treatment after fracturing his hand in a fall at a newly built house.The couple were returning by motorcycle around 7 pm when they allegedly quarrelled on the Pariyar-Bithoor bridge. Sujeet allegedly threw Usha into the fast-flowing Ganga before informing police. Officers questioned and detained him before arresting him.Usha’s relatives reached the bridge and joined the search on Friday night. However, police halted the operation because darkness and the strong current made diving dangerous. Police and divers resumed the search after daylight on Saturday.Safipur Kotwali in-charge Sandeep Mishra said efforts to trace Usha in the river were continuing and police were gathering information by questioning her husband.
