A total of 6 home guards and policemen were posted in these busy market areas from Monday, for an indefinite period. They remain on duty from 10 am to 5.30 pm every day.The personnel not only remove encroachments from footpaths, verandas and parking areas but also take action against illegal posters and banners across the Walled City. On Tuesday, several unauthorised posters and banners were removed from the Maniharon ka Rasta area as part of the drive.Head Constable Vijendra Sharma, posted in Johari Bazaar, said, “We are continuously removing encroachments. As a result, footpaths and verandas that were earlier blocked by handcarts are now open for pedestrians.” He added, “Earlier, vehicles were forced to park on roads because carts occupied footpaths. With the carts removed, vehicles are now parked more properly.”Meanwhile, Chaura Rasta Vyapar Mandal President Vivek Bhardwaj said the deployment of home guards reduced the confidence of encroachers. “Earlier, there was no one to check them. Now, 3 guards are permanently stationed and they also call senior officials when needed,” he said.However, Bhardwaj expressed concern that the problem resurfaces in the evening. “Once the guards leave, encroachment increases again. The guards work honestly, but issues return in their absence,” he said.Parking remains a major concern in the Walled City, particularly in Chaura Rasta. Bhardwaj said vehicles are parked at 90 degrees instead of the prescribed 45 degrees, leading to frequent traffic jams. “Parking contractors prioritise numbers over rules, and monitoring by zone officials, revenue inspectors and traffic police is inadequate,” he added.
