Ludhiana: A 12-year-old schoolgirl was killed and her classmate seriously injured after a speeding tractor-trailer allegedly ran them over while they were returning home from school in Jagraon on Thursday morning.The accident took place around 11am. The deceased was identified as Amritpreet Kaur, a Class VI student and daughter of Jagwinder Singh. The injured girl, Deep Kaur (16), a Class XI student and daughter of Manjinder Singh, was rushed to hospital and is stated to be in a serious condition.Sadar Jagraon police station SHO, sub-inspector Sukhwinder Singh Deol said a police team reached the spot soon after receiving information about the accident. According to the victim’s family, the two girls were returning home from school when a speeding tractor hit them.Amritpreet’s grandfather, Harjinder Singh, alleged that the tractor was being driven recklessly. He said Amritpreet died on the spot, while Deep sustained grievous injuries.The injured student was initially admitted to a private hospital in Jagraon. However, doctors later referred her to a hospital in Ludhiana due to the severity of her injuries. Sources said her condition remains critical.On the complaint of Jagwinder Singh, police registered a case against the tractor driver for causing death due to negligence. Police identified the accused as Inderdeep Singh alias Guggu, a resident of Sherpur Kalan village.The SHO said the accused had not been arrested till the filing of the report and efforts were underway to trace him.Meanwhile, CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced, purportedly showing the tractor being driven at high speed. The video also shows a cloud of dust rising from the road as the vehicle passes, adding weight to allegations of rash driving.
