Ahmedabad: Luring a 38-year-old businessman with the promise of a job at a Canada-based food company, cyberfraudsters duped him of Rs 28.6 lakh under the guise of immigration formalities.The victim from Isanpur approached the Cybercrime police on Tuesday and lodged a complaint against unidentified persons who allegedly posed as representatives of Indeed India and the Canadian company. Police said the fraud took place between June 26 and July 23.According to the complaint, the victim had uploaded his CV on job portals. On June 26, he received an email from an email address that resembled an Indeed India account, offering him a job at Giraffe Foods in Toronto. The email promised benefits including visa and flight expenses, accommodation, insurance and children’s education.The victim first paid Rs 1,850 via UPI as a recruitment fee. Shortly after, a scammer posing as an Indeed India manager arranged a phone interview with a woman claiming to represent the Canadian firm. Following the call, the 38-year-old was informed of his selection and given a fraudulent offer letter.The caller demanded Rs 7,290 for document verification. Subsequently, the fraudsters allegedly demanded payments for medical examinations, residence permits, bank account opening, fund commitment, agreements, GST-related material and immigration processing.The victim allegedly paid Rs 28,57,247 between July 1 and 15.On July 15, the victim was allegedly told that his visa application had been rejected because some documents were missing. The caller then claimed that the Canadian company would reprocess the application for CA$20,000.When the victim demanded a refund, he was asked to pay another Rs 2.8 lakh as a service charge. Later, another caller claiming to be an accounts executive offered to process the refund for Rs 18,000 plus GST.Realising he had been defrauded, the victim contacted the cybercrime helpline and subsequently filed an FIR with the Cybercrime police.
