Nagpur: The attempt on the life of former mayor MLC Sandip Joshi remains a mystery more than six years after two bike-borne assailants fired at his vehicle. The incident had taken place when Nagpur was hosting the winter session of the state legislature.On the night of December 17, 2019, Joshi was driving his SUV home from his 24th wedding anniversary party at a dhaba on the Outer Ring Road near Wardha Road, with friend Aditya Thakur beside him.Two men wearing helmets on a motorcycle fired three 7.65mm bullets from close range at Joshi’s vehicle. One hit the driver’s window, another pierced a rear passenger window and the third struck the rear windshield. Joshi and Thakur escaped unhurt.Joshi had received two anonymous threat letters days earlier, warning him against an anti-encroachment drive.Police had registered a case under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder) and the Arms Act. The Crime Branch probe was later handed to state CID, which recorded statements and examined CCTV and call records but made no arrests.Joshi said the attack stemmed from his crackdown on encroachments linked to daily extortion. No accused has been identified till date.
