Kanpur: Around 84 mm of rainfall between midnight and Wednesday morning brought large parts of the city to a standstill, with roads and residential areas turning into pools and canals. Waterlogging disrupted road movement across the city while many residents preferred to remain indoors due to the bad road conditions. The impact was somewhat limited as the city observed a holiday on account of Barawafat.Several localities in Kanpur South, including Govind Nagar, Saket Nagar, Barra, Yashoda Nagar, Naubasta and Machharia, witnessed severe waterlogging. In the city areas, Kaka Deo, Sarvodaya Nagar, VIP Road, Vishnupuri, Gwaltoli and Khalasi Line were submerged under two to four feet of water.A portion of VIP Road in Jajmau caved in following the heavy rain, creating a pit around 18 feet deep and nearly five metres in diameter. The incident raised concerns among commuters and residents in the area.Waterlogging was also reported at Kanpur Central railway station on both the city and the Cantt sides. Passengers faced difficulties in reaching the station, while the road from the station towards Ghantaghar crossing remained submerged under one to two feet of water. Railway tracks were also inundated.The Wazidpur treatment plant-Siddhanath Ghat road was submerged, while roads in Tar Bangalia turned into virtual lakes. Waterlogging was also reported at KESCo’s Chabiley Purwa substation.In Sarvodaya Nagar, access to the assistant labour commissioner’s office became difficult as its outer premises were completely inundated. The RTO Road was similarly transformed into a long stretch of water.Chawla Market crossing in Govind Nagar again turned into a major waterlogging point, with all four sides submerged under nearly two to three feet of water. Nandlal crossing towards Saket Nagar also remained inundated. Several stretches between Parag Milk Dairy and Gaushala were submerged at multiple points.At P Road market, clogged gully pits resulted in severe waterlogging, with rainwater entering some shops. A portion of the road near Gopal Talkies also caved in. The rear wheels of a loader carrying cement bags sank into the damaged road. Shopkeepers complained that rainwater had damaged their goods.The Juhi railway underpass also witnessed waterlogging, prompting traffic police to regulate movement from both sides as a precautionary measure.Meanwhile, water levels in the state’s rivers have started rising following showers in both the hills and plains. The Ganga crossed the warning level at Ganga Barrage. The upstream water level was recorded at 114.10 metres against the warning level of 114 metres, while the downstream level stood at 113.950 metres.At Shuklaganj, the Ganga was recorded at 112.620 metres against the warning level of 114 metres.……………
