T’puram: Coastal patrolling will be intensified along vulnerable stretches in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, including Vizhinjam and Muthalapozhi, amid concerns over the rising number of deaths at sea. More than 30 fishermen have died this year after venturing into the sea, according to fisheries officials. The intensified patrolling will be carried out in coordination with Coastal Police, with patrol boats deployed along the coast to monitor fishing activities and respond to emergencies. Officials said the move was aimed at preventing illegal activities at sea, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and strengthening rescue operations.During inspections, officials will check whether fishing vessels have valid registration and licences and whether fishermen are carrying mandatory safety equipment, including life jackets and other essential equipment. Authorities will also check for violations of fishing regulations and take action against those found flouting the rules.Vizhinjam and Muthalapozhi have been identified as vulnerable stretches where closer monitoring is required, officials said. The department will use the patrols to step up awareness among fishermen about weather conditions and safety precautions. Fishermen will be advised to follow weather warnings issued by the authorities before venturing into the sea and remain alert to changing conditions.Officials said fishermen should ensure that all mandatory documents and safety equipment are available on board before leaving the shore. They have also been instructed to undertake only legal fishing activities. The intensified surveillance comes as authorities seek to reduce accidents and improve safety along the coast.
