Hassan: Vacant plots in several localities of the city have turned into garbage dumping yards, leaving residents to deal with stench, health hazards and stray animals.S M Krishna Layout, Vijayanagar Layout and vacant sites along Holenarsipura Road and BM Road are among the worst affected. Residents alleged that domestic waste, plastic, bottles, papers, wet waste and construction debris are being dumped regularly on these empty sites.Several plots have also become hubs for illegal activities at night. “A few persons come during evening and night to consume alcohol. Drunkards throw empty bottles, plastic covers and paper there. The areas have become a favourite place for party freaks,” resident Sandarsh said, adding people continue to dump waste from vehicles.Weeds on the plots have become a shelter for snakes and insects. “We see at least two snakes a week,” said another resident, Govindegowda. He urged Hassan City Corporation authorities to take measures to clear the weeds.Student Utsav said the civic body must identify miscreants littering the space and ensure waste collection vehicles cover every household.Hassan City Corporation commissioner R Krishnamurthy said the city has nearly 30,000 vacant properties. “We have been monitoring these sites, and also issuing notices to owners to clean the area,” he said.Officials said tough action will be taken if owners fail to maintain cleanliness. “Problem exists mainly on sites lying at the outskirts of the city. We will collect fines from owners and take measures to clean vacant land,” the commissioner added.Residents have demanded immediate clearance of garbage and fencing of vacant plots to prevent further dumping.
