Jaipur: With Rajasthan Assembly set to convene on Aug 20, a tussle over its duration has already emerged, with Leader of Opposition, Tikaram Jully, demanding an 8-10-day sitting and govt indicating it could be limited to three or four days.At an all-party meeting at Vidhan Sabha Tuesday, Jully argued the House needs adequate time to debate issues concerning people across the state. He said student protests over govt schools’ condition should be given priority. “Students are protesting across the state. If these issues are not discussed in the Assembly, where will they be discussed?” Jully said, seeking discussions on the condition of govt schools, deaths of pregnant women, poor infrastructure and rising crime, among other issues.Govt chief whip Jogeshwar Garg, however, pointed to impending local body elections, saying MLAs would be needed in their constituencies for election-related preparations that cannot be ignored. Garg said the final decision on duration of session will be taken on Aug 20 after the Business Advisory Committee discusses the matter. “Govt has always wanted Assembly to run, but various factors have to be considered. This time, local body elections are also an important factor,” he said.On Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Garg said the Bill is likely to be introduced during the session, but its passage would depend on proceedings.
