New Delhi: A record 69,816 Indian students are enrolled at German universities in the Winter Semester 2025/26, making Indians the largest group of international students in the country, according to the latest figures.
Germany currently has 2,864,160 students enrolled at its universities, including 516,820 international students. International students account for 18% of the total student population, meaning nearly one in five students in Germany comes from abroad.
Indian students account for 13.5% of Germany’s international student population and 2.4% of its overall student population.
The number of Indian students in Germany has increased 17.5% year-on-year, adding nearly 10,400 students in a single year. The rise highlights the country’s growing appeal among Indian students seeking higher education and research opportunities.
Germany’s appeal has been attributed to its universities, research opportunities, industry linkages, relatively affordable education and career opportunities.
The growing number of Indian students also reflects the strengthening academic and scientific ties between India and Germany, with students increasingly choosing Germany for higher education, research, innovation and career opportunities.
The strong presence of Indian students comes as Germany’s overall international student population continues to grow, reinforcing the country’s position as a major destination for international academic mobility.
