Mangaluru: Mescom chairman K Harish Kumar has urged tourism minister KJ George to declare Jamalabad Fort, also known as Gadaikallu, a major tourism destination in the state, and develop a ropeway to improve access to the historic hilltop site.Kumar in a letter stated that the fort at Nada village in Belthangady taluk had significant tourism potential because of its historical importance, natural setting and distinctive geographical features. He pointed out that visitors currently have to negotiate a steep rocky stretch and nearly 2,000 rock-cut steps to reach the top, which he said makes the site difficult to access for senior citizens, children and people unable to undertake the strenuous climb.Kumar proposed that the government construct a ropeway and provide essential tourism infrastructure at the site. The facility, he said, would make the fort accessible to visitors of different age groups and physical abilities, while attracting more domestic and international tourists.In his letter, Kumar said developing the destination could generate employment for local youth, support tourism-related businesses and strengthen the local economy. Higher tourist footfall could also generate additional revenue for the conservation and maintenance of the monument, he added.He requested the minister to consider the proposal favourably, and initiate steps to develop the ropeway and other visitor facilities. The fort atop the Gadaikallu is a popular trekking destination near Belthangady, built in the 18th century.Gadaikallu is at an elevation of 1,788 ft above sea level and attracts hundreds of adventure enthusiasts seeking breathtaking views of the Western Ghats.The fort is approached through Nada village, and is known for its steep rock-cut steps and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, valleys and agricultural landscape. Entry is restricted during the rainy season because the rocks become slippery and dangerous.
