T’puram: A govt contractor was brutally assaulted by a five-member gang after they allegedly intercepted his vehicle at Puttummelkone Junction near Vilappilsala on Tuesday.Noor Muhammad, 56, of Oottukuzhi, was travelling from Kattakkada towards Vilappilsala when the accused who came on two motorcycles, allegedly followed his car and stopped it.According to the police, the accused allegedly consumed alcohol near the Thamburan Kavu area at Malapanamkodu before following Muhammad’s car.The assailants then allegedly opened the car door, pulled Muhammad out and attacked him in the middle of the road. CCTV footage of the incident shows the group repeatedly assaulting Muhammad before fleeing.Muhammad sustained injuries in the assault and was admitted to MCH. Vilappilsala Police said the motive for the attack was yet to be established and efforts were on to identify and arrest the accused.Muhammad was the convener of the Vilappilsala anti-waste plant people’s action committee and had been involved in public issues.The locals informed the police that intoxicated groups of youths often gather in areas between Mozhuvankode and Kundamoozhi and near the EMS Academy-Malapanamkodu road.Motorists travelling through these stretches were vulnerable to attacks. A vehicle was allegedly stopped and robbed in Malapanamkodu a few months ago.
