T’puram: The state govt will prepare a special action plan to ensure the safety of pedestrians on roads and address the difficulties they face, said transport minister C P John.Speaking at a meeting of senior officials from the road safety authority, Kerala Road Fund Board, the traffic department and Natpac, John said the width of zebra crossings would be increased on an urgent basis in view of the difficulties pedestrians face while crossing busy roads.Govt will also introduce ‘Pedestrian Crossing Rescue Spots’ on roads carrying multilane traffic. Both measures will initially be implemented on a pilot basis at East Fort and Statue in the capital city.The feasibility and effectiveness of the measures will be assessed before they are extended to other locations. Natpac has been entrusted with preparing a detailed estimate for the projects. The schemes will be implemented using funds from the road safety authority based on the estimate prepared by Natpac, the minister said.
