T’puram: Two elderly sisters were killed in a motorcycle accident while were crossing Thiruvallam-Enchakkal bypass road near Karimbuvila Junction around 7am on Sunday.The deceased were Shanta Amma, 62, and Vijaya Amma, 70, from Thiruvallam. According to police, the sisters were on their way to a temple in Nagercoil when the accident occurred.The women had reached the bypass from the service road and were crossing the highway holding hands when the motorcycle hit them. Police said the impact was severe, throwing the sisters onto the road in opposite directions. Both sustained serious injuries, including head injuries.Passersby took them to a nearby govt hospital; however, doctors declared both women dead despite efforts to save them. Their bodies were later shifted to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital for postmortem.The motorcycle was being ridden by Ariyan, a resident of Thiruvallam, who also sustained serious injuries in the accident. Locals took him to hospital after the crash. He was later admitted to a private hospital, where his condition is reported to be serious.The motorcycle was travelling from Kovalam side when it hit the sisters. Police said the primary assessment was that rash driving led to the accident. The exact circumstances of the collision and the speed of the motorcycle are being examined.Police also said pedestrian crossings are restricted on the stretch where the accident occurred.Poonthura police registered a case against the motorcycle rider under Sections 281 and 106(1) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Section 281 deals with rash or negligent driving on a public way, while Section 106(1) deals with causing death by negligence.
