Kanpur: A senior citizen from Unnao has alleged that he was duped of Rs 23 lakh on the false promise of being allotted a flat, prompting the registration of an FIR against the accused on the directions of the Kanpur Police Commissioner. The victim alleged that a man claiming to be a builder neither arranged the flat nor returned the money. He said he gave his life’s savings to the accused and, when he repeatedly asked for the money back, was put off with excuses before his phone numbers were eventually blocked. Police investigated the matter.In the FIR lodged by Ashok Kumar Gupta, a resident of Kabba Kheda in Vikas Nagar, Unnao, it was stated that in 2022, Satyam Gupta alias Kapil, a resident of Kanpur, introduced himself as a builder and assured him of arranging a flat. The accused allegedly won his trust and took a total of ₹23 lakh from him. Of this, ₹15 lakh was transferred online, while ₹8 lakh was paid in cash. The victim claimed he also had a written receipt for the cash payment.According to the FIR, after taking the money, the accused neither provided the flat nor returned the amount. The victim alleged that whenever he demanded his money back, the accused kept making excuses. Later, he allegedly behaved abusively and also blocked his phone number.Ashok Kumar Gupta said he had records of the online payment, a written acknowledgement of the cash amount, audio recordings and other documents. He claimed that in the audio recordings, the accused admitted to taking the money. The victim said he had earlier approached the local police, filed complaints through IGRS and other channels, but no concrete action was taken. He then submitted a complaint to the Police Commissioner, on whose directions the case was registered.Nawabganj police station in-charge Rajkesar said an FIR had been registered against the accused under sections related to criminal breach of trust and other relevant charges. Police are investigating the matter.
