Ganderbal , Aug 5: In a significant milestone for healthcare services in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, doctors at Trauma Hospital Kangan successfully performed a complex laparoscopic surgery to remove a very large endometriotic “kissing” ovarian cyst measuring 140 mm × 139 mm, diagnosed as Grade-4 Endometriosis, marking another major achievement in the hospital’s growing capacity to provide advanced gynaecological care.
The surgery was successfully carried out on August 3, 2026, on a 45-year-old female patient, who was managed entirely at Trauma Hospital Kangan without requiring referral to any tertiary care hospital. The successful management of such a complicated case at the district level highlights the increasing availability of specialised surgical services closer to the community.
The surgical procedure was led by Dr. Rafiq Simnani and assisted by Dr. Shaheena, Dr. Majid, Mr. Showkat, and other operation theatre staff. The anaesthesia team comprised Dr. Masrat, Dr. Umar, Mr. Gowhar, and supporting staff, whose coordinated efforts ensured the successful completion of the minimally invasive procedure.
Hospital officials said the successful laparoscopic removal of such a large endometriotic ovarian cyst reflects the institution’s enhanced expertise in managing advanced gynaecological conditions through minimally invasive techniques. Laparoscopic surgery offers several advantages over conventional open surgery, including smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, less post-operative pain, faster recovery, shorter hospital stay and quicker return to normal activities.
The procedure was performed under the close supervision of Medical Superintendent, Trauma Hospital Kangan, Dr. Nazir Ahmad, who congratulated the entire surgical, anaesthesia and operation theatre teams for their professionalism, dedication and teamwork in successfully handling the challenging case.
Officials also noted that the latest achievement builds upon the hospital’s earlier success in advanced laparoscopic surgery. On July 9, 2018, Trauma Hospital Kangan created history by performing its first major laparoscopic surgery in Ganderbal district, during which a giant benign tumour measuring approximately 20 × 15 centimetres and weighing around 4.5 kilograms, containing clear fluid, was successfully removed.
That landmark surgery was performed by a team comprising Dr. Faroze Khan, Consultant Surgeon; Dr. Imtiyaz Yatoo; Dr. Shaheena Rasool, Consultant Gynaecologist; Dr. Arshiya; Dr. Faheem, Consultant Anaesthetist; along with Farooq Ahmad Rather, Sheikh Gowhar, Sheikh Hilal, Showkat Magray, Muhammad Yaqoob, Amina, and Mushtaq Sheikh from the operation theatre staff. The patient had recovered well and was discharged on the fourth post-operative day.
Healthcare professionals described the successful surgery as another important step in strengthening advanced surgical services at Trauma Hospital Kangan, demonstrating that even highly complex gynaecological procedures can now be safely performed locally, reducing the need for patients from Ganderbal and adjoining areas to travel to tertiary care hospitals for specialised treatment.
