Patna: BJP MLA from Alinagar in Darbhanga district, Maithili Thakur, on Sunday slammed Purnia MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav over ‘mocking’ the Hindu religion through a skit performed outside Parliament on Friday. The skit was staged in protest against the alleged theft of offerings or donations made at the Ram Lalla temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.Thakur, a popular Maithili folk singer who was elected to the assembly for the first time, made the remarks even as Yadav was attacked later on Sunday at his Delhi residence. According to reports, a man armed with a dagger attempted to attack the MP while he was addressing a news conference. The attacker was overpowered by those present as he tried to flee and was later taken into custody by police. Videos of the incident circulated widely on social media and news platforms.Meanwhile, an FIR has been lodged in Varanasi against Yadav and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the skit. The move has drawn criticism from some quarters.Reacting to the controversy, Thakur said, “It is not right to make fun of any religion. We live in a country where every religion is respected equally.”“Religion is a personal choice, and no one would want to hear anything offensive about their faith. The police are doing their job,” she added.
