Gurgaon: Nearly six years after receiving approval, the 2-MLD sewage treatment plant (STP) at Bajghera is nearing completion, with around 85% of the work completed. Officials expect the project to be commissioned by Sept, providing much-needed sewage treatment capacity for villages and nearby residential societies along Dwarka Expressway.Built for Rs 7 crore, the project, which received GMDA’s approval in March 2020, was due for completion in Sept 2021. However, repeated resistance from residents over land acquisition delayed the project by nearly two years, and construction could begin only in 2023.Officials said civil works have now entered the final phase, with about 85% of the project completed. The remaining work involves installation of electromechanical equipment, testing and commissioning before the plant is made operational.The project includes the construction of a 2-MLD STP, a main pumping station and a recycled water pipeline. While MCG has already laid the trunk sewer connecting the area to the plant, work on the internal sewerage network is currently underway, the official said.“We have expedited the construction of the STP and the remaining work is expected to be completed within the next two months. Once operational, it will strengthen the sewerage system in Bajghera and surrounding areas, help address sewer overflow issues, and ensure that untreated sewage does not flow into the Najafgarh drain,” an official said.The STP is expected to improve wastewater management in an area that has witnessed rapid residential growth over the past few years and ensure treatment of sewage generated from villages and housing societies before its safe disposal.“In the absence of a functional sewage network, the wastewater generated from the village area often overflows onto the road or is dumped into the vacant area. Bajghera Road, particularly near Orchid School, has stagnated cesspools of wastewater, which is a serious health hazard,” said Ashok Rathee, a resident of Sector 113.At present, Gurgaon’s total installed sewage treatment capacity stands at 433 MLD, including 170 MLD at Behrampur, 218 MLD at Dhanwapur, 20 MLD at Jahajgarh, and 25 MLD at IMT Manesar.To meet the city’s rising sewage treatment requirements, GMDA is also planning significant capacity augmentation. Two new STPs — a 40-MLD plant at Naurangpur and a 100-MLD plant in Sector 107 — are currently in the tendering stage. The Naurangpur facility will cater to Sectors 77 to 80, while the Sector 107 plant will serve the rapidly developing Sectors 81 to 115.GMDA has also proposed expanding the capacity of its two largest existing treatment plants. Behrampur and Dhanwapur STPs are proposed to be upgraded by 100 MLD each, which will enhance the city’s sewage treatment capacity.
