Dibrugarh: Flood-hit schools in Sivasagar district will remain closed to students until Aug 9, the administration ordered on Friday.District commissioner and District Disaster Management Authority chairperson Mridul Yadav extended the summer vacation for govt, provincialised, ad hoc and private schools after widespread flooding damaged campuses and infrastructure.The floods affected 982 schools and 81,276 students: 356 schools in Nazira education block, 237 in Khelua, 225 in Amguri and 164 in Demow.Issued under Sections 30 and 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the order cited inundation, silt accumulation and waterlogging, which pose health and safety risks. Physical classes will resume on Aug 11.Heads of institutions and teaching and non-teaching staff must report on Aug 1. Until Aug 10, they will oversee restoration, desilting, sanitisation, structural and electrical safety inspections, relief coordination and remedial academic planning.Prescheduled examinations may proceed with adequate safety and administrative precautions. Violations will invite penal action under Section 51 of the Act and applicable service rules.Several schools are also serving as relief camps, complicating preparations for reopening.
