Bengaluru: A road accident claimed the life of a 10-year-old girl in Beeravara village of Nelamangala taluk Thursday morning, leaving residents in mourning.Likhitha S, a class 4 govt school student, was fatally knocked down by a Maruti Swift car while she was crossing the road on her way to school. Likhitha was accompanied by her elder aunt and cousin when the car, travelling from Nelamangala towards Kunigal at high speed, knocked her down at 8.45am.The tragedy has devastated her family, particularly her father Srikanth, whose emotional account of his daughter’s death moved many villagers, police said.Srikanth, a mason, said he raised his three daughters through sheer hard work without seeking financial help from anyone. Srikanth’s elderly mother is bedridden due to illness, and he has been taking care of her in his native village. He visits his Beeravara home once or twice a week to spend time with wife and children. While recalling the last moments he shared with Likhitha during his Sunday visit, Srikanth broke down.Her aunt, Vishala, said, “Likhitha had a class test. She asked me to help her cross the road and drop her near school. After crossing, the girl realised she had forgotten her pen. She asked me to wait by the roadside and said she would be back with the pen. But the car hit her during her return.”Residents have been demanding a skywalk at the spot as many children and women cross the road.
