Times News NetworkKanpur: Moderate to heavy monsoon showers brought much-needed relief to the city residents from oppressive heat and humidity on Tuesday evening, with around 14.7 mm of rainfall recorded in nearly an hour in parts of the city.The showers, which lashed large parts of Kanpur South and the central city between 4 pm and 5 pm, led to a sharp drop in temperatures and eased the sultry weather that had prevailed through the day. However, areas such as Nawabganj and parts of western Kanpur remained largely dry.Earlier in the day, the weather observatory at Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology (CSA) recorded the maximum temperature at 36 degrees Celsius, around 2 degrees higher than Monday’s reading. Following the rainfall, the temperature dipped by nearly 4 degrees, providing significant relief to residents struggling with high humidity.The observatory recorded the day’s maximum relative humidity at 85%. Slow-moving north-easterly winds, blowing at speeds between 2.3 kmph and 5.1 kmph, had contributed to uncomfortable weather conditions before the showers.CSA University’s weather expert, SN Sunil Pandey, said atmospheric conditions remain favourable for continued monsoon activity across the region. “An increase in atmospheric moisture and the influx of moisture associated with developing weather systems are expected to keep skies generally cloudy across the Kanpur division from July 29 to August 2,” he said.He added that isolated areas may witness strong surface winds, scattered drizzle and light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Intermittent sunshine is also likely during this period, while humid conditions are expected to persist.Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms across all districts of the Kanpur division over the next 24 hours.In view of the active monsoon conditions, the weather department has issued a heavy rain alert for the entire division. For Kanpur Nagar, the IMD has predicted generally cloudy skies with one or two spells of heavy rain and thunderstorms, particularly during the afternoon or evening hours. The maximum temperature is expected to remain around 34 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is likely to hover near 26 degrees Celsius.The latest spell of rainfall is expected to improve moisture conditions but may also trigger waterlogging.
