Noida: Greater Noida Authority on Sunday terminated two officials for alleged negligence after a six-year-old boy drowned in a water-filled pit dug for a tubewell project in Knowledge Park II.The excavation was for a new tubewell meant to improve water supply to Kaladham Society. Work had begun only three days earlier. According to the authority, the contractor started the project without informing senior officials of the water department, and the pit later filled with water, leading to the fatal accident.GNIDA CEO Ravi Kumar NG said a preliminary inquiry found that the contractor had started work without putting mandatory safety measures in place at the site.

“The contractor has been blacklisted and a police complaint registered against him. The inquiry also found negligence on the part of the water department. Technical supervisor Akash Kumar and supervisor Johny Kumar were terminated from service for failing to discharge their duties,” he said.The authority has ordered a departmental inquiry into the incident, to be conducted by general manager (projects) AK Singh. It has also directed all engineering and project divisions to ensure proper barricading and other safety measures are in place before any construction work begins, and warned that strict action would be taken against contractors and officials found carrying out work without adequate safety arrangements.SDM Sadar Ashutosh Gupta also reached the spot after being informed of the incident. He said a detailed report would be submitted to senior officials at the earliest.The victim, Avyaan Surya, son of Sivan Yadav, died on Saturday evening after slipping into the water-filled excavation. Locals said the child was playing with other children around 7pm when he entered the pit to retrieve a stick and lost his footing. Residents pulled him out and rushed him to Yatharth Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
