There is no immediate relief in sight for Ahmedabad district, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rain and thundershowers in the city through Sunday.A gradual reduction in rainfall intensity is expected only from Monday onwards.While widespread rain is expected to continue across Gujarat over the next two days, the forecast indicates a gradual weakening of monsoon activity over Ahmedabad district from July 28.

Rainfall is likely to become less widespread from Tuesday, with light to moderate showers expected at a few places later in the week.“Ahmedabad district will remain under a yellow alert on Sunday after an orange alert on Saturday. Rainfall activity is expected to reduce thereafter, with light to moderate rain likely over the city. Gujarat will continue to receive good rainfall as the weather is being influenced by two low-pressure systems, one over southwest Rajasthan and another over the northwest Bay of Bengal adjoining the West Bengal coast. A shear zone connecting the two systems is enhancing rainfall activity over the region. The monsoon trough is also lying south of its normal position, which favours increased monsoon activity over central India, including Gujarat,” said Ashok Kumar Das, director, IMD Gujarat.Light to moderate rain is likely at most places across Gujarat over the next two days, with heavy to very heavy rainfall forecast at isolated locations in several districts. The intensity of rainfall is expected to ease gradually over parts of the state from the beginning of next week.Ahmedabad recorded 46.7mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8.30am on Friday, followed by another 12.9mm between 8.30am and 5.30pm. The season’s cumulative rainfall has reached 439.9mm.The rain kept temperatures well below normal, with the maximum settling at 26°C, six degrees below average, while the minimum was 23.8°C. Relative humidity remained high at 96% in the morning and 93% in the evening.Across Gujarat, the monsoon remained vigorous on Friday, with exceptionally heavy rainfall reported in Patan and extremely heavy rain in parts of Banaskantha, Patan and Kheda.
