Kanpur: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Tuesday arrested a private school manager in connection with the 2008 scholarship scam.The accused, Lal Singh, manager of Sant BDS Public School near Manikpur turn and a resident of Besaramau Road, was taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.According to officials, scholarship funds meant for students of Classes 1 to 10 were distributed in cash in 2008. It is alleged that officials of 27 schools in the district took advantage of the system, committed irregularities in scholarship distribution and misappropriated funds.After the matter came to light, FIRs were registered against the schools concerned in 2009.During the investigation, it emerged that most of the 27 schools named in the probe no longer exist. About 10 months ago, the EOW wrote to the District Inspector of Schools (DIOS) and the Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA), seeking the names, addresses and mobile numbers of the managers and principals who were associated with these schools at the time.District inspector of schools, Atul Kumar Singh, said that in Sept, the organisation had sought information about the concerned schools and their managers and principals.He said that during the departmental inquiry, none of the schools was found to be operational, nor could the persons concerned be traced. Based on the available facts, a detailed report was submitted to the EOW, which is now taking further action as part of its investigation.
