Chandigarh: A man was arrested while he was allegedly attempting to steal copper wires from air-conditioner units in Sector 9 in the early hours of July 14. Two of his accomplices, however, managed to flee the spot.The arrested accused has been identified as Kavi (28), a resident of Phase IX, Mohali.According to the complaint, Gurzant Singh, a resident of Ambala and employed as a security guard at the residence of Rajya Sabha MP Rajinder Gupta in Sector 9, was on duty between midnight and 9am on July 14.Around 3.50 am, while monitoring CCTV footage, he noticed the movement of three suspicious persons on the roof of a commercial building housing Trident Group at SCO nos. 20-21, Sector 9-D. Suspecting an attempted theft, he immediately alerted the police by calling the 112 helpline.Gurzant also reached the building, where the suspects allegedly tried to flee on seeing the police. With the help of the responding police team, one of the accused, Kavi, was apprehended from the roof of SCO nos. 1, 2 and 3, while the other two escaped.During inspection of the roof of SCO nos. 20-21, police recovered about 8kg of copper wire allegedly removed from AC units.Based on Gurzant Singh’s statement, police registered a case and arrested Kavi on theft charges. Efforts are on to identify and nab the two remaining suspects, police said.
