Mohali: Nearly three weeks after a sensational double murder that shocked the region, the Mohali police have secured the custody of the prime accused Sahil Malik from Panipat Jail. Police are questioning him to ascertain the motive behind the killings and recover evidence.Lalru police brought Sahil to Punjab on production warrant and produced him before a Dera Bassi court on Tuesday. The court remanded him in four days of police custody. Police have registered separate murder cases against him in Lalru, Punjab, and Samalkha, Haryana.According to Lalru SHO, inspector Yogesh Kumar, on June 17, Sahil allegedly stormed into the office of his uncle, Rahul Malik (45), a property dealer, in Suraksha Enclave, Gholumajra. He allegedly opened fire inside the office, injuring one person and shooting Rahul before forcing him into a Tata Safari and fleeing towards Haryana.During the escape, Sahil allegedly contacted his friend Ankush and sought his help in disposing of Rahul’s body. Police said Ankush refused. The accused then allegedly shot him dead as well. Investigators said Sahil later abandoned both bodies by the roadside after failing to dispose of them in a canal due to the presence of passersby.Police said Sahil was subsequently arrested in a joint operation by Punjab and Haryana Police near the Murthal toll plaza.Investigators are now focusing on establishing the exact motive behind the murders and recovering key evidence, including the .12-bore gun allegedly used in the crime, the victims’ mobile phones and a DVR containing CCTV footage. Police suspect the weapon, reportedly licensed in the name of Sahil’s father, was thrown into a canal near Panipat after the killings.
