Mangaluru: Minister for health and family welfare UT Khader on Wednesday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the landslip tragedy. During the visit to the incident spot at Naguri on Wednesday, he said that the district administration has been directed to provide the injured with free, best possible treatment under govt support. He announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of the deceased, including those from other states, and added that chief minister DK Shivakumar has been informed and necessary directions have been issued.He noted that residents, police, and officials worked hard to shift six victims to the hospital, saving three lives, and commended them for their timely response. He said officials identify risk-prone spots and issue advisories, urging residents to avoid high-risk areas during the monsoon and move from locations prone to landslips or water accumulation. Authorities cannot monitor every house and stressed the need for public cooperation, he said.He urged residents to assess risks around their homes and take precautionary measures, especially during heavy rains. If dangerous spots are present along public roads or on govt land, people should inform local representatives and authorities so corrective measures can be taken. Houses damaged in the incident will receive Rs 1.2 lakh each as compensation. Referring to affected tenants, he said owners have been directed to carry out immediate repairs, adding that compensation will be given to property owners and they must ensure tenants are not left without shelter. A meeting will be held to formulate a plan on how to support affected families and stand with them during their time of grief. Stating that the incident is a warning for the coast, he said heavy rainfall has increased the risk of landslips and called for greater vigilance.Meanwhile, DCM Parameshwara, expressing condolences on X, wrote, “I have spoken to the DC of the district and directed the officials to ensure that all necessary rescue, relief, and rehabilitation measures are taken without delay. The Fire and Emergency Services, NDRF, and the district administration are continuing rescue and relief operations. The govt stands firmly with the affected families and will extend every possible support.”
