Guwahati: In an effort to curb overcharging and improve transparency in parking and market fee collection in the city, Guwahati Municipal Corporation on Friday announced steps to streamline the process.GMC held a meeting with parking and market leaseholders after complaints from citizens and traders that attendants and fee collectors were charging above civic rates. Officials said the measures aim to boost accountability and prevent unauthorised collections.“We strongly believe that if these measures are implemented, the allegations of excess fees being collected will be reduced drastically. This will lead to more transparent and orderly parking services, while creating a healthy and convenient environment for businessmen and customers,” GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania said. The corporation made it mandatory for every employee collecting parking or market fees on behalf of leaseholders to wear a designated uniform while on duty, to help the public identify authorised personnel.GMC also directed that only receipt books approved and verified by the corporation be used for fee collection, to curb unauthorised receipts and allow citizens to confirm legitimate payments. In addition, all employees involved in collecting fees will be issued official identity cards, enabling commuters, traders and customers to verify collectors before paying and reducing the scope for impersonation.“GMC reiterates that safeguarding public interest remains its highest priority and said it would continue monitoring the implementation of the new directives to ensure compliance by all leaseholders and fee collectors operating under the municipal corporation,” the mayor added.
