Prayagraj: Serious fire safety violations, including the absence of mandatory No Objection Certificates (NOCs), missing emergency exits, expired fire extinguishers and illegal basement operations, were detected during the inspection of coaching institutes in Prayagraj and Kaushambi on Thursday. As part of an ongoing safety drive, 10 teams of the fire department inspected over 18 coaching centres, while 10 institutes — four in Prayagraj and six in Kaushambi — have already been sealed for non-compliance.So far, more than 65 coaching and educational institutions across the region have been inspected. The inspections revealed serious safety and regulatory irregularities at several centres. A majority of the institutions lacked a valid fire department NOC and were directed to obtain one at the earliest. Emergency exits were missing at some locations, posing a grave risk to students in the event of an emergency. In addition, fire extinguishers at many institutes were found to be either expired or non-functional.The inspections also revealed violations of approved land-use norms and building plans. In some institutions, classes and libraries were being operated illegally in basements, disregarding essential safety and ventilation requirements. Several coaching centres were accommodating students beyond their sanctioned capacity, increasing the risk of stampedes during emergencies.Officials also found serious lapses in electrical safety, including exposed wiring, inadequate smoke exhaust systems and poor ventilation. The inspection drive highlighted that some institutions were prioritising commercial interests over student safety and regulatory compliance.Senior administrative officials have directed concerned departments to continue inspections and ensure strict action against institutions found violating safety norms and prescribed regulations.
