Nagpur: Bulk waste generators producing over 100kg of garbage daily will have to segregate, process and scientifically treat waste at source, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) said on Tuesday Authorities, however, have been directed to focus on awareness first, with penalties to be imposed only on habitual violators. The directions were issued by mayor Neeta Thackeray at a workshop and technology exhibition for bulk waste generators organised jointly by NMC and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). She underscored the need to comply with the Centre’s rules and Supreme Court directives to improve Nagpur’s performance in the Swachh Bharat Mission rankings, and advocated the use of technology, including a mobile app, to alert residents about garbage collection schedules.Municipal commissioner Dr Vipin Itankar said NMC is planning an app that will provide real-time information on garbage collection vehicles, contact details of sanitation workers and guidance on scientific waste management. He emphasised that public participation, along with technology adoption, will be key to making Nagpur garbage-free.Representatives of hospitals, malls, marriage halls, housing societies and other bulk waste generators were briefed on registration requirements, responsibilities and penal provisions. The civic body also felicitated institutions that have adopted on-site waste processing, while companies showcased solutions such as doorstep collection of recyclables and conversion of wet waste into biogas.
