Patna: In a move aimed at strengthening welfare measures for app-based delivery personnel and other gig workers, urban development and housing minister Nitish Mishra on Tuesday inspected the newly established Gig Workers AC Lounge near Gandhi Maidan and interacted with workers to understand their challenges, work experiences and expectations from the govt.Nitish visited the air-conditioned lounge near Gandhi Maidan Gate No. 4 and also inspected a similar facility near Income Tax Golambar. He reviewed the amenities available and directed officials to ensure their smooth functioning and proper maintenance.During the interaction, Nitish said gig workers were becoming an increasingly important part of the urban economy.“The role of gig workers is becoming increasingly important in the changing urban economy. They play a significant role in ensuring the prompt delivery of food items, essential goods and various services. Providing a better working environment and essential facilities to such workers is among the priorities of the state govt,” he said.He said the initiative reflected the Bihar govt’s commitment to labour welfare and inclusive urban development.According to officials, Patna is the third city in the country to introduce dedicated AC lounges for gig workers. The facilities have been developed primarily for delivery partners associated with quick commerce platforms and other digital service providers who spend long hours outdoors. Each lounge can accommodate around 15 workers and offers seating arrangements, drinking water, mobile charging points and a clean resting space. Officials said the facilities would provide relief during extreme weather conditions, including heatwaves and heavy rainfall, while enabling workers to take breaks between assignments.During the visit, Nitish also held discussions with delivery personnel, who shared their experiences and work-related concerns. Several workers welcomed the initiative and thanked the state govt for creating a dedicated resting space, describing it as a much-needed facility for those spending long hours on the streets.Patna municipal commissioner-cum-managing director of Patna Smart City Ltd Yashpal Meena and other officials were present during the inspection.
