Panaji: The directorate of archives is conducting trial runs of an online platform that would allow users to search records, submit applications and eventually obtain digital certificates from their homes.A demonstration of the system is expected shortly, with officials expressing confidence that services could go live by next month. The first record series slated for online availability are the captain of ports (COP) records and Documento Para Viajar records, from 1956 to 1961, which are frequently requested by individuals seeking documentation related to citizenship and nationality applications.Officials hope to launch online viewing, application processing and digital certificate services for these collections by the end of June, subject to final testing and implementation. The new system will place searchable PDF inventories online, allowing researchers and members of the public to locate relevant file references from home before visiting the archives.“This alone could reduce footfall at archival offices and eliminate unnecessary trips by applicants,” Shenoy said.
