Guwahati: A retired Assam Police Service (APS) officer died after being assaulted by his neighbour following a minor dispute in the Ghoramara area under Basistha Police Station in Guwahati. Police said the accused was arrested in the early hours of Monday from Jorhat.Kapil Pathak, OC of Basistha Police Station, identified the deceased as Girin Chandra Deka and the accused as Sanjit Boro. “The incident happened on May 15, after a minor accident involving a car dent, reportedly led to an altercation between Deka and Boro, who were neighbours,” the OC said.Police said the argument escalated into a physical confrontation during which Boro allegedly assaulted Deka, leaving him grievously injured. Deka was taken to a private hospital, where he remained under treatment for nine days before succumbing to his injuries. His body was sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for post-mortem examination.“His family members filed an FIR which was registered at Basistha Police Station on 19th of this month and accordingly an investigation was initiated. The accused fled to Jorhat immediately after the incident and went into hiding in Jorhat in an attempt to evade arrest.” Pathak said.Police said a team tracked Boro’s movements based on specific inputs and arrested him in Jorhat early Monday, after which he was brought to Guwahati for legal proceedings. “A case has been registered under section 103 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act. He has been produced before the CJM court on Monday,” he also said.According to reports, Deka began his career as a sub-inspector in Assam Police and rose through departmental promotions before being inducted into the APS. He later served as the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Hojai district before retiring.
