Bhagalpur: With the construction of a Bailey bridge underway on the collapsed portions of Vikramshila Setu to restore regulated movement of vehicles, boats and ferry services introduced by the district administration have emerged as a lifeline for commuters travelling to Naugachia and nearby areas.The services are particularly benefiting small vendors, daily wage workers and other regular commuters affected by the disruption in road connectivity.To facilitate the transportation of goods and essential materials, large cargo vessels have also been deployed across the Ganga river. These vessels are being used to ferry stone chips, sand, cement and other materials loaded on tractors, pick-up vans, small and large trucks, besides carrying medical ambulances and commercial vehicles.Sources said eight large ferries and 14 cargo vessels operated by three private agencies have been permitted to run across the river. Of these, two to three cargo vessels have already started operations after the completion of jetty fabrication and related infrastructure work along the embankments. More vessels are expected to begin services soon.The district administration initiated the arrangements to maintain trade, commerce and movement of people after traffic came to a standstill following the collapse of a large reinforced cement concrete (RCC) slab section of Vikramshila Setu on May 3 night.Bhagalpur DM Nawal Kishor Choudhary said strict monitoring of boats, ferries and cargo vessel operations is being carried out after road connectivity was disrupted due to the bridge collapse.“Operators found violating the guidelines and directives will face strict action under the Disaster Management Act, 2005,” the DM said, adding, “We are monitoring the waterways services.”
