BERHAMPUR: A 33-year-old man, who was accused in a brutal attack on a 30-year-old on Sunday evening, was injured in a police firing late at night, hours after the incident.The accused, Jagannath Sahu alias Jaga, sustained bullet injuries in both legs during an encounter near Sukunda. According to Berhampur superintendent of police (SP) Saravana Vivek M, Jagannath was accompanying a police team to recover the weapon used in the assault when he allegedly hurled bombs at the personnel from a stash concealed nearby.Police opened fire in self-defence, injuring him. He was admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment. Police said that Jagannath has at least nine criminal cases filed against him.Earlier in the evening, Jagannath and his brother allegedly attacked Mangala Behera of Laxmi Narasingh Street with sharp weapons in public at Ambika Nagar under Bada Bazar police limits, leaving him seriously injured. Behera was admitted to a hospital.Police said that the attack stemmed from past enmity. Behera had allegedly hurled bombs at Jagannath’s house three months ago and was released on bail four days ago. He, too, is a history-sheeter with at least four cases against him, police added.
