Chennai: Former deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin was elected DMK‘s legislative party leader on Sunday, a day before the first session of 17th assembly has been convened. Since DMK is the principal opposition party, Udhayanidhi will be the leader of opposition.According to a statement from DMK, former minister K N Nehru will be the DMK’s deputy legislative party leader and party senior E V Velu will be the party whip. The decision to elect Udhayanidhi as the party floor leader was taken at the DMK MLAs meeting held on Thursday. In 2021, former CM M K Stalin was elected the legislative party leader by the DMK MLAs. Because of Stalin’s defeat in the recently held assembly election, Udhayanidhi has taken over the mantle from Stalin.The announcement from DMK comes a day ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of MLAs and a couple of days ahead of the confidence motion where TVK would have to prove its majority in the Assembly. The election of speaker and deputy speaker of the assembly would be held on Monday.
