PATNA: An 82-year-old poet from Muzaffarpur got the shock of his life on Sunday when his bank balance showed nearly Rs 759 crore instead of his regular pension amount. The elderly persons, Kameshwar Mishra had gone to a Common Service Centre to collect his old-age pension. His disabled son, who receives a disability pension, went with him. After withdrawing the pension, Mishra asked the CSC operator to check his account balance. The screen displayed Rs 759,69,51,951. When they checked his son’s account too, it showed an equally massive figure. Together, the two accounts reflected more than Rs 1,500 crore. Both Mishra and the CSC operator were left baffled by the numbers. The family believes it was a technical or banking system error.“I don’t understand where this huge amount came from,” Mishra said. “I’ve told officials about it so they can check and fix the mistake.”According to the information, the huge balance remained visible for about few minutes. Soon after the matter was reported to the bank, the amount disappeared from both accounts. This is not the single case of such a large balance seen in an elderly person’s pension account, but two similar cases were reported from Vaishali, while one each was reported in Samastipur and Nawada district. All these pensioners initially found more than Rs 740 crore in their accounts, when they went to withdraw their pension amount. However, later the bank officials and local authorities clarified that it was a technical glitch. No such huge amount was credited to their account.
