Nagpur: There is good news on the anvil for Gorewada Wildlife Research and Training Centre (WRTC) which has been hosting tigers and leopards way beyond its capacity, as sources say that Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has in-principle agreed to their proposal for shifting eight tigers. While official confirmation was awaited, source say the green signal is almost guaranteed and the tigers will be shifted to two different zoos. Sources said a formal letter is expected this month itself. The Gorewada WRTC is one of the best facilities in the state where animals are sent for long-term care. While some are sent back to the forest after treatment, those with major human imprint have to be kept away from the wild forever to avoid human-animal conflict. Currently, there are almost two dozen tigers at the WRTC. Amongst the general public, the WRTC is often confused with the Gorewada Zoo even though both are on separate campuses. The Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra (FDCM) handles the zoo, and in partnership with Maharashtra Animal & Fishery Sciences University (Mafsu) it manages WRTC.
