Mangaluru: Mangalore University (MU) has recorded 786 malpractice cases across seven examination cycles conducted at affiliated centres between Feb 2023 and Jan 2026, according to officials and data available with TOI.The highest number of cases was reported during the Feb/March 2023 odd-semester examinations (I, III and V), when 226 malpractice incidents were booked across 126 centres. A sharp fall was seen in the June/July/Aug 2024 even-semester cycle (II, IV and VI), with cases dropping to 13 across 118 centres — the lowest in the period under review. However, cases rose again in 2025. The mid-year even-semester examinations recorded 125 cases, followed by 114 cases during the Dec 2025/Jan 2026 odd-semester cycle. While decision letters have been issued for the first six cycles, the latest 114 cases are yet to be finalised.University authorities said the overall trend shows a decline in reported cases and that preventive measures have been strengthened, even as the university faces a shortage of exam squad teams.H Devendrappa, registrar (evaluation), MU, said that except for the most recent examination held in Dec and Jan, decision letters detailing punishments recommended by the university’s malpractice committee have already been handed over to candidates. He added that the most common forms of malpractice include writing notes on the body, using mobile phones, and carrying chits, and that cases involve students of both genders. He also referred to concerns raised by the university syndicate about one examination centre that allegedly reported repeated and high numbers of malpractice cases over the years. He said the centre in question, along with others, has been warned of strict action during a recent meeting, and that MU is considering cancelling recognition of centres if violations persist.Sources in the university said malpractice cases have reduced over time, attributing the decline to changes introduced after MU revised its ordinance on disciplinary action. Officials said a fine system, along with stricter punishments, was introduced through amendments to the “Ordinance governing the acts of indiscipline and malpractice in the university examinations,” which took effect in 2023.
