Nagpur: Addressing the long-pending issue of garbage piling up in open plots in Pratap Nagar, newly elected corporator Nidhi Telgote on Sunday led a large-scale cleanliness drive opposite Radhe Mangalam Hall, clearing over 768kg of waste from a plot that had turned into an informal dumping ground. The site was strewn with plastic waste, construction debris, and household garbage, prompting concerns among residents over hygiene and public health.A total of 63 volunteers participated in the drive, undertaking manual cleaning and segregation of waste. The campaign received support from Vrikshit Foundation, whose members helped coordinate the effort and ensured proper disposal of the collected garbage.Telgote monitored the operation and interacted with residents. She said the issue had been on her agenda for some time and that the clean-up followed sustained follow-up and community cooperation. Emphasising collective responsibility, she said the city needs citizens willing to act, not merely raise complaints.Describing the initiative as a meaningful step, Telgote stressed that lasting cleanliness requires coordination between civic authorities and residents. She underlined the need to reclaim public spaces and prevent them from being used as dumping sites again. Garbage accumulation in open plots was a key issue during the civic polls in Ward 37.Alongside waste removal, the drive focused on awareness about segregation and civic responsibility. Volunteers ensured the collected waste was sorted to facilitate appropriate disposal.Residents present at the site pledged to maintain cleanliness and prevent further dumping, expressing willingness to participate in similar community initiatives in the future.
