New Delhi: A 65-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl in southwest Delhi, police said. According to officers, the minor approached the local police station with her family to file a complaint. In her statement, she said she had been playing with her younger sister near a school when the man— a neighbour known to her — lured her to his nearby shop and allegedly assaulted her. DCP (Dwarka) Kushal Pal Singh said the man lives around 50 metres from the girl’s home. The child also told investigators that similar incidents had happened earlier. On Sunday, after the alleged assault, she informed her mother, who then shared the matter with the child’s aunt. The family subsequently decided to approach the police. A case has been registered under Section 65 (punishment for rape in certain cases) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. Police said the man was beaten up by residents before being detained, a video of which later circulated on social media. Responding to the family’s allegation of police negligence, DCP Singh said, “The complaint was received on Tuesday. A case was immediately registered and the accused was arrested.” TNN
