Berhampur: A six-year-old girl was killed after being run over by a speeding bus at Dhaupada village under Ganjam district’s Bargarh police station limits on Sunday, triggering a protest by the locals who blocked road demanding compensation for her parents. Kalpana Nayak, daughter of a daily wager, Krushna, of the same village, was walking on the road when the Baliguda-bound bus ran her over. Kalpana, a Class I student, died on the spot, police said.The villagers blocked the road by placing the body, disrupting communication between Berhampur and Baliguda in Kandhamal district via Sorada for several hours.Police forces and Dharakote tehsildar Lambodar Marandi rushed to the spot and tried to convince the agitators. The bus was seized from the spot, and its driver detained. Police suspected speed and harsh driving might have been the cause of the incident.The tehsildar provided Rs 30,000 to the parents from the district Red Cross, while the agitators demanded more. They also demanded construction of speed breakers on the road. The tehsildar assured the agitators that the administration would arrange for more compensation to the parents.Saurabh Ranjan Pradhan, the subdivisional police officer (SDPO) of Aska, said after this, the situation came under control and the traffic on the road was restored. The body was sent to the Subdivisional Hospital, Aska, for postmortem.A case was registered at Badagarh police station, and further investigation was underway. Police said they would take action against the bus driver after the investigation.
