Mumbai: Six Indian-flagged vessels laden with crude oil, LPG, LNG, and cargos reached Mumbai and other ports ever since the war broke in Iran on Feb 28, with the latest two India-bound liquefied petroleum gas tankers carrying about 94,000 metric tonne of the cooking gas safely transiting the Strait of Hormuz amid regional tensions.Carrier BW Tyr arrived in Mumbai on March 31 while BW Elm reached New Mangalore on April 1. A source from the director general of shipping told TOI: “A total of 18 Indian-flagged vessels carrying different fuels and essential commodities with 485 Indian seafarers were present in the Persian Gulf region and were being closely monitored by the Indian govt.” As of late March 2026, multiple vessels successfully arrived in Mumbai from the Strait of Hormuz despite regional tensions, including the Liberia-flagged tanker Shenlong carrying about 135,000 tonnes of crude and several LPG tankers, including BW Tyr in Mumbai and BW Elm at New Mangalore. The source said the Shenlong was among the first, docking in Mumbai on March 12 after carrying Saudi crude oil. “By late March, multiple Indian-flagged vessels and tankers continued to cross the waterway, with many using the Indian Navy’s escort or coordinated, authorized safe passage with several tankers frequently transiting for energy supplies,” said the source.Officials said these arrivals represented crucial, secure energy shipments of crude and LPG from the Gulf to India amid heightened risks in the Strait. “Shipping through the Strait has largely halted amid the conflict, with Iran permitting passage only to ‘non-hostile vessels’ coordinating with its authorities,” a statement released by the Indian Govt said.As per data from maritime tracking platforms, BW TYR was among the latest Indian-flagged ships to complete the transit. It followed several other tankers, including Shivalik, Nanda Devi, Pine Gas, and Jag Vasant, which already crossed the strait. At least three more Indian vessels remained in the western section of the Strait, awaiting transit clearance, the DG shipping source said.
