Mysuru: Department of school education and literacy will provide three months of free karate and self-defence training to 58,675 girl students studying in higher primary and high schools across Mysuru district this year.The training will be conducted under Rani Lakshmibai Atmaraksha Prashikshan programme to boost self-confidence, develop self-defence skills and create awareness about child safety laws.The department plans to begin the programme in Sept ensuring regular academic activities are not disrupted.With grants already released, headmasters have been directed to recruit karate coaches for a monthly remuneration of Rs 3,000 and conduct training classes for three hours, three days a week, across three months in their respective higher primary and high schools.The qualification for a karate trainer is a minimum SSLC pass (class 10), along with a certificate of completing karate training from a recognised Karate Association.Girl students in 140 higher primary schools and 235 high schools will benefit from the training this year.Speaking to TOI, Kamala, district planning officer, Comprehensive Education System, department of school education and literacy, said directions had been given to headmasters of higher primary and high schools to recruit karate coaches at the taluk level and begin training classes for female students from Sept.She said the karate training programme will not only provide self-defence techniques but also boost overall confidence.Suresh, physical education inspector, Mysuru South block education office, said the karate training programme has received a good response from both girl students and their parents.“Undergoing self-defence training is not only good for the girls but also for themselves as well as for the society,” he said.
