Varanasi: Azamgarh police cancelled the arms licences of accused involved in cases of kidnapping, threatening, extortion and also booked them under Gangsters Act.Azamgarh’s CO (Sagadi) Deshraj Singh said following approval of district magistrate Ravindra Kumar, police cancelled six firearm licences held by persons involved in serious criminal cases. Of the cancelled licences, three belonged to residents of Raunapar police station area, two of Bilariaganj and one of Mehnagar.In Bilariaganj, the licence of revolver owned by Wasiur Rahman of Gulwa Gauri, was revoked. He is accused in cases of kidnapping, fraudulent land transfer, extortion, cheating, criminal intimidation and offences under the UP Gangsters Act. Alam of Muhammadpur, lost his DBBL gun licence for involvement in cases of unlawful assembly, assault, house trespass and threats.In Raunapar, licence for rifle of Suryadev Yadav, resident of Ajgara Magarvi, was cancelled in connection with cases of rioting, encroachment, assault and threats. Brajesh Singh of Tulapur lost his SBBL gun licence over cases registered in 2024 and 2025. SBBL gun licence of Shiv Kumar of Jokhara was revoked for his role in assault and intimidation cases.In Mehnagar, firearm licence of Ashfaq Ahmad of Khutwa Chak Khutwa was cancelled for his involvement in a case of assault and offences under the SC/ST Act. Police said such action will continue against licence-holders endangering public safety.Azamgarh SP Anil Kumar said while reviewing criminals’ files, he had ensured cancellation of 57 firearm licences so far while this drive will be intensified further.
