Times News NetworkKanpur:To ease traffic congestion in the city, 40 major crossings will be revamped under the ‘Guiding Infrastructure for Traffic’ (Project GIFT) initiative.Modern traffic facilities will be developed at the 40 intersections selected in the first phase by January 2027.Site plans for all 40 intersections have been prepared and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and tender process have been completed.During a meeting of the district-level road safety committee held on Friday at the new auditorium at Sarsaiya Ghat, District Magistrate Mahendra Singh Tanwar reviewed the progress of the project and directed the concerned departments to ensure the completion of high-quality work within the stipulated timeframe.The District Magistrate stated that under ‘Project GIFT’, facilities would be developed at major intersections to ensure organized traffic flow. These will include ‘left-free’ arrangements, U-turns where necessary, clear directional signboards, road signage, and road markings.These arrangements would enable drivers to receive clear information about directions and routes well before they reach intersections. This will help in reducing unnecessary delays, streamlining vehicle movement, and managing traffic pressure.He stated that the development of intersections will not be limited to construction work alone. Projects would be carried out with due consideration for the traffic requirements of each intersection, road safety, and the convenience of citizens.For this, the concerned departments—including the Public Works Department, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the Municipal Corporation, and the Kanpur Development Authority (KDA)—have been instructed to work in coordination with one another. The progress of the project will also be reviewed on a regular basis.The first phase of ‘Project GIFT’ includes the following intersections: Ramadevi, Tatmil, Rawatpur, Ghantaghar, Deputy Padav, Moolganj, Sarasaiya Ghat, LLR Hospital, Arya Nagar, Bangla Bhawan, Fazalganj, Chawla Market, Nandlal, Sachan, Barra Bypass, Shastri Chowk, Vijay Nagar, Shivli, Jarib Chowki, and Afeem Kothi.In addition, the following intersections have also been included in the project: Gol Chauraha, Bara Devi Chauraha, Double Petrol Pump Chauraha, Naubasta Chauraha, Bada Chauraha (near Z-Square Mall), Naveen Market Chauraha, Dasu Kuan Chauraha, Narona Chauraha, Phoolbagh Chauraha (Charlie’s Crossing), the T-junction at Kalyanpur Metro Station, Kendranchal Chauraha, Chandrika Devi Chauraha, Gumti No. 5 Chauraha, Juhi Nahariya Chauraha, Bakarganj Chauraha, Namak Factory Chauraha, Jajmau Chauraha, Kidwai Nagar Chauraha, Nayaganj Chauraha, and Coca-Cola Chauraha.
