Barabanki: Three children drowned while bathing in a rainwater-filled pit at Baina village under the Kursi police station area on Sunday evening. The victims were identified as Deva (13), Sumit (10) and Divyansh (15).According to police and local residents, the pit had been dug on the premises of an under-construction factory for excavation work and filled with rainwater after recent heavy showers.The children had gone to the site with several others around 4 pm and entered the water. While bathing, they reportedly moved towards a deeper section of the pit and began drowning. Other children present raised an alarm, drawing villagers to the spot.Residents launched a rescue effort and pulled out Deva and Sumit, who were rushed to a private hospital. Doctors declared both dead on arrival.Divyansh remained missing initially. Police from Kursi station, assisted by local divers, launched a search operation. Floodlights were arranged after dark to continue the search, and the teenager’s body was eventually recovered from the pit after several hours.The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination.Fatehpur sub-divisional magistrate Kartikeya Singh visited the site and inspected the area following the incident.The tragedy plunged Baina village into mourning, with grieving families receiving the bodies of the children. Police said further legal proceedings are underway.
