Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 231 of the 292 students who applied for revaluation of their Kerala University LLB answer scripts passed the examination with significantly improved marks, according to a report submitted by Controller of Examinations to Vice-Chancellor.These include 45 students of Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram, who failed in the initial valuation. Student organisations, including the SFI, had staged protests alleging serious lapses in the valuation process. The protests intensified after it emerged that a student who had written a correct one-and-a-half-page answer was allegedly awarded zero marks. The marks of all 44 students who applied for revaluation of the fifth-semester examination were changed, with the variation ranging from 10% to 50%.Under university regulations, action has to be taken against examiners if the difference between the initial valuation and revaluation exceeds 20%. The SFI alleged that the syndicate failed to take action against examiners who conducted the initial valuation, despite a report on the issue having been submitted to it.Taking note of the seriousness of the issue, Vice-Chancellor directed that all answer scripts subjected to revaluation be sealed immediately and kept in the safe custody of Controller of Examinations. The syndicate has decided to make the distribution of question papers and valuation of LLB answer scripts fully online. Double valuation will be introduced for the professional LLB course, along the lines of the system followed for postgraduate and MBBS examinations. Students will also be allowed to inspect their answer scripts. The revaluation marks may be examined by an expert committee to identify lapses in the initial valuation and determine whether further action is required against the examiners concerned. The university is also expected to examine the reasons behind the widespread complaints from students about its LLB examinations.
