Mumbai: Around 210 trees are set to be impacted for the proposed RBI staff quarters project in Chembur. A proposal of the project will be placed before the BMC’s Tree Authority on Friday, which is expected to take a final decision. According to the plan, of the 210 trees obstructing the construction on the plot measuring over 10,000 sq m, 101 will be felled and 109 will be transplanted. Around 161 trees will be retained on the site. The proposed development is for RBI staff quarters on plot number 1763/2 in Chembur. The tree species on the plot include peepal, jamun, badam, ashoka, coconut, jackfruit, gulmohar, mango, and fishtail palm among others.The BMC, has so far, maintained that due process was followed, including inviting public objections and suggestions, and that no objections were received within the stipulated deadline.As part of mitigation measures, the BMC has stated that Miyawaki plantation will be undertaken on 5% of the open space within the plot to compensate for the loss of tree cover.
