Silchar: Police recovered the body of a 21-year-old woman from a septic tank in Sribhumi district. Two men have been arrested in connection with the case.The woman had been missing for over a week. The case surfaced after residents reported a foul smell from a septic tank for several days and alerted the gram panchayat authorities. Police reached the spot and recovered the body during a search operation.The victim, from neighbouring Hailakandi district, was found in a house about 50 km from her home. After an inquest in the presence of a magistrate, the body was sent to Sribhumi Civil Hospital for an autopsy.Ratabari police station sub-inspector Sujit Sinha said the house owner, 26-year-old Abul Hossain, was arrested from the premises. The second accused, 21-year-old Lutfur Rahman, was arrested from Lakhipur in Cachar district.Preliminary investigation found the victim was in a brief relationship with one of the accused. Police suspect the two brought her to Hossain’s house while his wife and children were away.“The exact cause of death is yet to be established. We are also investigating whether the victim was sexually assaulted or was pregnant. These facts will be known only after the autopsy report is received,” Sinha added.A court in Karimganj remanded both accused in five days of police custody.
